A New Experience

Pittsburgh International Airport is transforming travel by undergoing an ambitious, airport-wide modernization to better meet the needs of a region on the rise, providing Western Pennsylvania with an elevated platform for exploration, development and innovation in 2025.

A transformed PIT is designed to deliver a more intuitive, cohesive and carefully crafted passenger journey – from curb to gate and back again. Our aim has been simple: to shape an easier, more enriching, more universally accessible experience because we believe everyone has the right to feel welcome and considered in our airport.

Parking

Transforming PIT meant intentionally infusing technology into our design process while providing a sense of place and simplifying the visitor journey, and that starts with new parking options. Our new 3,300-space garage and 2,700-space lot make finding a space, getting quickly to the new terminal and returning to your vehicle or accessing a rental car when your trip concludes have been made easier:

• Triples the amount of covered parking at PIT
• State-of-the-art space-finder system
• Clear, distinctly Pittsburgh signage
• Advanced, eco-friendly snow-melt technology
• Electric vehicle charging stations
• Quick access to terminal and rental cars

Wayfinding

Navigating a transformed PIT is a more intuitive experience from the moment visitors arrive at the airport. Whether from our new roadways, while parking or while progressing from terminal to gate to baggage claim, movement through the transformed PIT has been designed to make sense:

• Clear roadway line of sight
• Distinct arrival/departure signage
• High-contrast, high-accessible signage
• Strategically placed electronic information displays
• Reduced walking distances and times
• Intuitively navigable terminal design

Check-In

A transformed PIT is built to provide a more welcoming, more seamless experience from the moment travelers arrive in our new terminal. A combination of intuitive design and modernized, more noticeable signage will guide travelers to their airline’s ticketing counters, making it easier to check in for a flight, check baggage and move on through the airport:

• Simplified placement near entrance
• Accessible-height ticketing counters
• Modernized electronic information displays
• Same level as security checkpoint

Security

Moving through PIT’s transformed security checkpoint will be a more streamlined, efficient process, reducing the time it takes to make your way through the airport and on toward new amenities, renovated gates and your flight. The latest screening technology and a more open checkpoint space help ensure a quicker, more convenient security experience:

• Reduced wait times
• 12 security lanes in a singular location
• State-of-the-art screening equipment
• Updated electronic information displays
• Expanded, more open space
• Post-security recompose space

Connector Bridge

A transformed PIT has been reimagined to share with travelers a distinctly Pittsburgh experience – one that would not be complete without a bridge. Emulating the city’s renowned entryway, the Fort Pitt Bridge, PIT’s new connector bridge links passengers from security checkpoint to airside while imparting something more memorable, familiar and enduring:

• Inspired by the Pittsburgh community
• Shorter distance, security to gate (replaces PIT trains)

• Quick access to restaurants and shops
• Dynamic tunnel lighting reflecting Western PA skies

Restaurants & Shops

The journey through a transformed PIT continues as travelers move seamlessly from check-in through connector bridge and on toward a revitalized offering of concessions. PIT’s complement of both local* and national restaurants and shops has been inspired by visitor feedback and curated to enhance what our visitors experience:

• Improved seating with in-seat device chargers
• New LED lighting
• Updated designs and carpeting
• Upgraded informational screens
• Modernized restrooms featuring art installations
• Nursing room in each concourse

Baggage Claim

A transformed PIT has been designed with traveler efficiency in mind. PIT’s new, more streamlined baggage system delivers luggage faster, decreasing wait times (and stress) by delivering checked luggage either before or at the same time travelers arrive at our modernized baggage claim space:

• State-of-the-art baggage handling system
• Shorter luggage travel time, plane to baggage claim
• Eight, new, larger baggage claim carousels
• Modernized electronic informational displays
• More open waiting spaces
• Quick access from baggage claim to parking, rental cars, public transportation and ridesharing options

Meet & Greet

A transformed PIT is designed to be as unique as the region it serves. Pittsburghers park, make our way inside the airport, then wait to greet our friends, colleagues or loved ones after their flights have arrived. It’s a distinctly Pittsburgh tradition known as the meeter-greeter phenomenon, and it has shaped the design of our new airport:

• More spacious design concept
• Increased indoor and outdoor seating
• Shorter travel time from gate to baggage claim
• Outdoor green terraces with rest areas
• Decreased baggage wait times

Ground Transportation

A transformed PIT is designed to connect travelers with their destination seamlessly and effortlessly, whether back to their vehicle after a trip or to rental, bus, taxi or rideshare options. PIT’s new customer service building is purpose built to provide convenient, indoor access to link travelers with the ground transportation connecting them from the airport to wherever they need to be:

• Fully enclosed customer service building
• Connection to new parking garage
• Rental car desks, parking and pick-up
• Direct access to bus, taxi and rideshare curb

Impact

As the Pittsburgh region continues to redefine itself, the Allegheny County Airport Authority is transforming PIT to meet the challenges of tomorrow, better serve the community and advance the region’s role as a world leader. Our future is intrinsically tied to the prosperity of the passengers and the community we serve. An airport modernized for today and designed for tomorrow also reduces its operational costs—and a smarter, more cost-efficient airport will create a ripple effect of opportunity. Building the new PIT has been an economic jet engine, creating thousands of jobs and generating billions of dollars for the Western Pennsylvania economy—and its impact will continue for years:

• 14,300 jobs created
• $2.5B in economic activity
• $1B in direct labor income

• Over 90% local labor and supplies
• No state or local taxes used
