Pittsburgh International Airport’s $1.1 billion modernization is taxiing toward takeoff.

Allegheny County Airport Authority board members approved nearly $41 million in spending Friday for work related to the project in anticipation of construction starting this summer.

More than half of that — $21.3 million — will be spent on contracts for site preparation, which is expected to start April 23. The biggest contract, nearly $20.9 million, went to Independence Excavating for general construction related to the site prep work.
