The days of homogenous, bland airport design are behind us. A new generation of airports are emerging, with cutting-edge technology and a striking sense of place.

It used to be that the only outdoors at an airport were dismal smoking or plane-watching terraces, but the latest upgrades are providing far more outdoor space, or else bringing gardens in. Pittsburgh’s forthcoming new terminal promises “a pavilion in the middle of a forest…”
