Weekly Update
Integrating Art—Literally – March 17, 2025
The art program has been integrated with new Pittsburgh International Airport from the start, and that is no more evident than through artist Patrick Marold’s art columns, the first piece of which was placed last week.
Three of these steel sculptures will be seen throughout the green space in front of the new terminal, including the one in the photo above—except, as you can see, half of this one lives inside the new Customer Service Building that will house rental car counters and take passengers between the new parking garage and terminal.
Outside of Adam Kuby’s Currents design seen on the parking garage and roadway walls, these art columns are the first standalone art features to be installed in the new PIT.
Meanwhile, the construction of the Customer Service Building continues to progress quickly—with walls, exterior glass, flooring and more moving closer to completion each day.
Making Travel Easier: Gates To Be Renumbered
As part of our airport opening later this year, our goal is to improve the passenger experience, and to align with industry best practices across the world, PIT will renumber our gates in the B, C, and D concourses. Concourse A gates will retain their current numbers, and all concourses will retain their A, B, C or D identification.
The renumbering is designed to improve the perception of distance from the core to gates and reduce complexity. PIT previously numbered gates across all four concourses sequentially – Gates A1 to D88. The higher gate numbers create a negative passenger perception, leaving an impression that gates are very far away, regardless of actual distance. The new cadence will number gates sequentially in each concourse, for example: Gates D76-D88 will change to D1-D7.
Construction starts in March and PIT’s renumbering will arrive in phases during April, as part of the ongoing transition to the new airport opening as scheduled in 2025.
Specific information will be provided in next week’s Update.
