Pittsburgh International Airport is Transforming

The modernization of Pittsburgh International Airport will provide the region with an airport engineered for the challenges of the future.

The First Impression Pittsburgh Deserves

Pittsburgh’s a special place—it deserves a special first impression. The Terminal Modernization Program is expected to reshape the future of the region by reflecting and serving its community, inspiring the industry, and advancing the region’s role as a world leader.

What’s Happening

Pittsburgh deserves an airport it can be proud of for years to come. That’s why we’re building one that not only serves passengers better and fulfills the region’s future needs, but also evokes the essence of Pittsburgh. As the city continues to establish itself on the world stage, the Terminal Modernization Program (TMP) will deliver real opportunity to the region—all while creating a lasting first impression for visitors.

A Faster, More Efficient
Passenger Experience

The TMP will create a more efficient, more enjoyable experience for anyone coming to, passing through, and departing from PIT. The TMP will reduce travel and wait times for passengers and their bags. It will add plentiful, close-in and covered parking, provide adequate space and the latest technology for TSA screening while providing new passenger and baggage check-in and baggage claim facilities.

A New Terminal Facility

This new experience will be enabled by a new, approximately 811,000 square-foot-terminal facility that will include airport operations, consolidated airline operations, as well as all passenger and public spaces, such as ticketing, baggage claim, a meet-and-greet area, security checkpoint and retail and concession options.

Multi-Modal Complex

New parking and transportation infrastructure will include a new roadway system that will support the new terminal building, as well as a multi-level parking garage and a dedicated ground transportation center.

Economic Upside

The construction of the new terminal is expected to add nearly 14,300 direct and indirect jobs to the region and generate approximately $2.5 billion in economic activity. In the end, the result will be an airport that Pittsburgh can be proud of, encouraging more leisure and business travelers, as well as businesses, to experience everything the region has to offer.

Commitment to Sustainable Construction and Operation

Pittsburgh International Airport is committed to increasing environmental sustainability through the Terminal Modernization Program. For construction and operation of the new terminal and multi-modal complex, the program design team are complying with the LEED Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) credit for building materials, while also seeking reductions in energy, emissions, water, and waste.

Prospective vendors are encouraged to present products, materials, and services that comply with third-party verified sustainability criteria or reporting standards, are regionally sourced (extracted, manufactured, or purchased), and/or that can demonstrate a lesser or reduced effect on human health and the environment when compared with competing products and services that serve the same purpose.

Why It’s Happening

Pittsburgh deserves a world-class airport that not only evokes the essence of Pittsburgh but also can be efficiently managed and operated. Such an airport will reduce its operational costs, which will have a ripple effect, creating numerous opportunities to better serve passengers. This new, one-of-a-kind airport will be the gateway to our one-of-a kind city—and an airport that every Pittsburgher will be proud of.
