Begin Master Planning Process
The Allegheny County Airport Authority started work on its Master Plan Update (MPU) in October 2013. The MPU’s key findings resulted in the recommendation of the Terminal Modernization Program, consisting of relocated Landside Terminal functions and related ground-side functions to be adjacent to the Airside Terminal.
Sept. 2017
New Terminal Project Announced
In September 2017, Allegheny County Airport Authority announced plans for a new terminal project at Pittsburgh International Airport to reduce long-term costs, benefit the traveling public and align the facility with the needs of a modern passenger experience.
May 2018
Environmental Master Plan Approval By FAA
In May 2018, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved the Master Plan detailing the project. No significant environmental impacts related to the project were identified.
2018 – Early 2019
Assemble Program Management & Design Teams
Jacobs Project Management was announced as the Program Management Team for the Terminal Modernization Program in June 2018. Gensler + HDR in association with luis vidal architects were announced in July 2018 as the design, engineering and architect teams, respectively. In January 2019, Michael Baker International was announced as the Multi-Modal Complex Architecture & Engineering Team. To learn more, visit The Team.
Feb. 2019
Concept Design Revealed
At the annual State of the Airport event on Wednesday, Feb. 20, Allegheny County Airport Authority unveiled the visionary concept design for the Terminal Modernization Program at Pittsburgh International Airport.
April 2019
Assemble Construction Management Teams
In April 2019, PJ Dick/Hunt was selected as the Terminal Construction Management Team and Turner Construction Company was selected for the Multi-Modal Complex Construction Management Team. To learn more, visit The Team.

Design & Early Construction
The design of the new terminal will begin in 2019, with some phases of early construction taking place.
2020
Post-Pandemic Design
In summer 2020, the TMP design team, along with local and national experts, began evaluating potential design and operational changes that may be necessary due to impacts to public facilities from COVID-19.

Opening
While the exact date is still being determined, the new Pittsburgh International Airport will be operational, featuring a more efficient, improved passenger experience, facilities designed for the future and a atmosphere that is distinctly Pittsburgh.
