As construction of Pittsburgh International Airport’s new Landside Terminal has passed the halfway mark, airport officials said this week that the project’s cost has risen.

What recently was pegged as a $1.4 billion cost has jumped to $1.57 billion. Blue Sky, the airport’s online news site, blamed the hike on pandemic-related inflation and supply-chain shortages. But no local or state tax dollars are being used to pay for the project; the Allegheny County Airport Authority will back construction bonds from operating revenues, most of which are paid by the airlines.
